e-bulletin - November 2007
Birmingham Forward Welcome to our penultimate E-Bulletin of 2007. How the year flies by, it seems we have only put away the Christmas decorations and here we are getting them out again.
Overall this has been an extremely positive year for Birmingham Forward and our members. We continue to be recognised as a key voice in the city and some of our campaigns are now bearing fruit. By now you will all have received the results of our triennial survey together with our action plan to address the key issues you raised. Thank you to everyone who took part.
Thus far in 2007 we have moved the High Court campaign forward with our first small victory, we have developed our core themes for a BID for the city centre, we have refined and improved our Events offering, and we have launched our enhanced Advised in Birmingham directory to a global audience.
Last Friday evening over three hundred members and their guests enjoyed Birmingham Forward third Annual Chairman’s Gala Dinner. Sponsored by Advantage West Midlands, the event was held for the first time at the International Convention Centre. Hosted by Diane Benussi guests enjoyed a four course dinner created using only local produce.
After dinner they were entertained by broadcaster and political sketch writer, Matthew Parris who reflected on his time as an MP, working in Mrs. Thatcher’s private office and his recent career reflecting on politics for The Times. Guests also heard from Brendan Connor, Director of sponsors AWM about their West Midlands Champions programme.

Better Together – the business charter for social responsibility
Working with our colleagues at BITC we are looking for some 40 member firms to commit to this charter. Already some 21% of our members are signed and many report that they have found the process extremely rewarding. As well as being an effective way to measure your current commitment in this area the charter helps you to consider and review other areas you may not have previously considered.
For further information about how your firm can participate please email our CEO, Richard Brennan: richard@birminghamforward.co.uk
New Deputy Chair for Birmingham Future
Matt Taylor, Account Director at Headline Communications, is to be the new Deputy Chair of Birmingham Future. Matt has taken on the role from Joy Stefanicki who is leaving the city to pursue a career in New York.
New Chairman sought to head DiverCity work
The search is on to replace the chairman of Birmingham Professional DiverCity, who is to retire after completing two full terms in the role.
Norman Gascoigne has been at the head of the organisation – which helps the city’s professional services sector manage and value diversity – since it was created in 2002. And now the organisation – based in the city centre – is beginning the process of replacing Mr Gascoigne, who steps down in 2008. It is anticipated that his successor will play an ambassadorial role as they will be speaking to a national audience about what Birmingham has achieved and spreading the word about the great work being done in the city.
Applications should be made in writing for the chairman’s role by 16 November 2007 to Sangeeta Chauhan, Birmingham Professional Divercity, Cornwall Buildings, 45-51 Newhall Street, Birmingham B3 3QR. For a recruitment pack information please email Sangeeta@birminghamdivercity.co.uk or call 0121 222 4115

Celebrating 25 years of KEY success
Patron members, Key Personnel celebrate 25 years of providing high quality independent recruitment services to industry and commerce. To mark the occasion Key Personnel held a party earlier this year at Metro Bar & Grill and made a donation to charity Cure Leukeamia.
Key Personnel first opened their doors in Birmingham on 28 April 1982. The business was set up by Sue Bates who is now Chairman, and she was joined by her sister Mary Hendry in 2002.
Commenting on their success Sue Bates said, "Our 25th year in business is going extremely well. We are committed to working with clients old and new for as long as people want us. Being Brummies, we love the city and the many many friends and colleagues we have had the pleasure to know over those years."
In addition Mary Hendry added "What we do is very simple which is to supply the right people to the right job. We do not cut corners, and our standards remain as high as they ever did, which is why, despite fierce competition, we are still here and still growing. I am so proud to have a fabulous team around us which results in Key continuing to remain one of Birmingham's most well known and respected recruitment companies."

Little steps for a better future…
No.33 - Recycle printer cartridges - We're serious. It's a lot easier than you think. Go to www.actionaidrecycling.org.uk and you can find out all about it. Of course, we wouldn't need printer cartridges at all, if those predictions from a few years back of the 'paper-free office' had come true.
No.34 - Buy Fairtrade products - Happiness is a fair traded banana. Fairtrade products guarantee to give the real producers a fair share of the profits. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers in the developing world. So, if you buy a Fairtrade banana, you can be proud of your banana.
Birmingham… did you know?
Joseph Priestley, the world renowned Birmingham-based scientist and chemist, discovered oxygen. He was forced to leave Birmingham after a rioting mob destroyed his house in Sparkbrook.
